EVOLUTION AND TRENDS IN ORGANIZED RETAILING

EVOLUTION AND TRENDS IN ORGANIZED RETAILING

INTRODUCTION:

India’s retail market which is seen as THE GOLDMINE by global players has grabbed attention of the most developed nations. This is no wonder to the one who knows that the total Indian retail market is US $350bn. (16, 00,000 crore INR approx.)  of which organized retailing is only around 3 percent i.e. US $8bn (36,000 crore INR approx).

“Retailing includes all activities involved in selling goods or services directly to final consumers for personal, non-business use. A retailer or retail store is any business enterprise whose sales volume comes primarily from retailing.” Retail is India’s largest industry, accounting for over 10 per cent of the country’s GDP and around eight per cent of the employment. Retail industry in India is at the crossroads. It has emerged as one of the most dynamic and fast paced industries with several players entering the market.

The urban retail market has been embracing various new formats and the malls turned out to be the trend setters by promising the concept of shoppertainment. The trends in the rural market also have been changing from the old Haats and Melas to the rural malls like ‘Chaupal Sagar’ launched by ITC, DCM Shriram Groups one-stop shopping destination called ‘Hariyali Bazaar’, Godrej groups agri store ‘Adhar’ etc.

EVOLUTION AND TRENDS IN ORGANIZED RETAILING: FORMATS AND REACH OF RETAIL OUTLETS.

EVOLUTION:

Historical Indian retail market consisted of weekly markets, village fairs and melas and the 19th century gave birth to the retail outlets which took the form of convenience stores, Mom and Pop stores/ kirana stores. This helped the consumers on to stick to a particular store for their day to day requirements and also avail the credit purchasing facility. And in the 1980’s people have seen the new formats like supermarket, departmental stores and discount stores entering into the Indian retail space.  In less than a decade hypermarkets have gained all the applause of the retail market and stood above all the other formats by bringing in the concept of “one stop shopping.” This stood as an opening door for the new generation of the retail industry. And very soon the malls became the trend setters in the new millennium.

This has coined the term of ‘shoppertainment’(shopping and entertainment) which can be attributed to the changing life styles of the people.

EVOLUTION OF THE INDIAN RETAIL MARKET

The above given diagram is the pictorial representation which depicts the evolution of the Indian retail market formats based on their category and value proposition. And a brief description above formats based on some of the parameters like their offerings, space occupied etc. is also given below for better understanding.

TRENDS IN PRESENT RETAIL MARKET:

New Product Categories:

For a long time, the corner grocery store was the only choice available to the consumer, especially in the urban areas. This is slowly giving way to international formats of retailing. The traditional food and grocery segment has seen the emergence of supermarkets/grocery chains (Food World, Nilgiris, Apna Bazaar), convenience stores (ConveniO, HP Speedmart) and fast-food chains (McDonalds, Dominos).

It is the non-food segment; however that foray has been made into a variety of new sectors. These include lifestyle/fashion segments (Shoppers’ Stop, Globus, LifeStyle, Westside), apparel/accessories (Pantaloon, Levis, Reebok), books/music/gifts (Archies, MusicWorld, Crosswords, Landmark), appliances and consumer durables (Viveks, Jainsons, Vasant & Co.), drugs and pharmacy (Health and Glow, Apollo).

Increasing competition in the retail market:

New entrants such as Reliance, Bharti Enterprises and the AV Birla group will compete against well-established retailers, such as Pantaloon Retail, Shoppers’ stop, Trent, Spencer’s and Lifestyle stores. Foreign retailers are keenly evaluating the Indian market and identifying partners to forge an alliance with in areas currently permitted by regulations. With an estimated initial investment of USD 750 million, Reliance is planning to launch a nationwide chain of hypermarts, supermarkets, discount stores, department stores, convenience stores and speciality stores. These 5,500 stores will be located in 800 cities and towns in India

CONCLUSION:

Organized retailing in India has been maturing by passing through many trends with the entry of many big players trying to build and strengthen their retail muscle by pumping in a lot of money in the retail space. And in the light of this situation some feel that the conventional stores may loose out their existence. But the very fact that the US unorganized retail market accounts to only 20% of it’s entire retail market which is still bigger than the Indian retail market reveals that the conventional stores and the modern retail formats will co-exist.

Life Lessons From Rudolph: Six Ways Lovable Misfits Can Leverage Their Own “red Nose” for a More Fulfilling 2009

By Robin Fisher Roffer

We all know the story. We’ve watched the classic movie over and over and had the cheery song stuck in our heads for days. (You’re hearing it now, aren’t you?) We’ve cheered on the plucky red-nosed reindeer and his companion Hermey, the determined elf with dental school dreams. Even as adults, we’ve delighted in the snowy North Pole scenes, shuddered at the Abominable Snowman, and rejoiced at our unlikely hero’s happy ending. But few of us have really pondered the meaning behind this little fable: that a fulfilling life means being yourself—(symbolic) glowing red nose and all.

There’s never been a better time to march to the beat of that proverbial “different drummer” who makes you you. And if you take a lesson from the most famous reindeer of all, you can make 2009 the year you turn your unique qualities to your advantage.

While Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer was made in 1964, its theme—that embracing your uniqueness pays off—is even truer today. In a global world where businesses (and employees) face a literal world of competition, where people meet their spouses via Internet dating services, and where everyone from hot celebrities to your Uncle Fred have MySpace accounts, fearlessly being yourself is the only way to distinguish yourself from the teeming masses.

Here’s how Rudolph and his pals channeled their own “fearless fish” to save the day on that foggy Christmas Eve—and how you, allegorically at least, can do the same in 2009.

Let your nose shine bright. Once it became apparent that Rudolph wasn’t like the rest of his peers, his well-meaning father devised a way to help him “fit in.” The mud-covered nose didn’t last for long, and when his true self shone through, the other reindeer immediately excluded him from the reindeer games. On the other hand, the pretty little doe Clarice told him his red nose was “much better than that false one you were wearing.” The point? Playing an “acceptable” role never works—at least not for long.

When you aren’t authentic, it shows. Instead of fitting in, you come across as dishonest and untrustworthy. Don’t downplay your ethnic background, or try to hide the fact that you’re gay, or maybe a country music fan in an office full of hip-hop listeners. Give the world a fearless representation of who you are and let the chips fall where they may. Chances are they’ll fall in your favor.

Don’t just longingly read your dentist book. Grab your (metaphorical) drill and get to work. Hermey is an elf. At the North Pole. Of course he should make toys, right? Wrong! Hermey wanted to be a dentist instead, and in the end, he found the initiative to pursue his dream. Taking the first step toward big life changes, especially those that go against the grain can seem overwhelming. But as fearless fish we see the need for those changes and we take a flying leap instead.

We all have dreams that we have been too scared to fulfill in our lives. Perhaps it’s a new career path, or finally going back to school. Or maybe you are living in a city that just doesn’t work for you. Make this the year that you finally change those things. You will be amazed at how many other things begin to fall into place in your life once you allow yourself to pursue the things that really make you happy.

Seek out your own Hermey and make friends. On the surface it may seem like a red-nosed reindeer and an elf who wants to be a dentist may not have all that much in common. However, it was Rudolph’s misfit mantra and Hermey’s outcast status that bound them together and helped them become an unstoppable force. Likewise if you’re a “fish out of water,” you should align yourself with others who are different or special in their own ways.

It’s important to find others that you can count on as allies and friends in your quest for success. No, you don’t need to hold out for a coworker pal who is also an immigrant from China—that’s probably unrealistic. But you might join forces with, say, another maverick who is trying to lead the charge for dynamic change within the company.

Find a boss like Santa. No one is suggesting that you find a job in a toy shop, or seek out a jolly leader in a red suit. Rather, seek out leaders or influential colleagues with the insight to recognize what you bring to the table. Santa used Rudolph’s difference to make him a great leader for his team. This is the type of person to look for in your organization who can help take you to the top.

Look for individuals who are creative and open-minded and put yourself in their path. These are the people who will champion your ideas and talents when the time is right. Rudolph was given the chance to save Christmas because he had a leader who could appreciate his unique talent. If you have been laid off, use this opportunity to make your next job one with the right kind of leadership. Your moment could be right around the corner—it just takes having the right people to help get you there.

Help the misfit toys in your own life. Rudolph and Hermey use their alliance with one another to overcome the odds and achieve their own happy endings. It would be easy to assume that the story stops there, right? Not for fearless fish. Just like Rudolph uses his influence with Santa to help the misfit toys find happy homes, you must advocate for others who need a helping hand.

Once you have begun to find your own way, use the leverage you have achieved to help others on their journey. After all, you were one of them at some point and it’s important to maintain the mentoring cycle. It’s not just a nice thing to do for someone else; it’s a catalyst for continued growth and positive energy for yourself, too.

Make sure you’ll go down in history. It may seem obvious, but the things that make you unique are of any good to you only if you use them. It’s easy to see the things that make you different as what keeps you outside the group at large. In reality, they are your own secret weapons. If Rudolph hadn’t used his nose to guide the sleigh through the fog, he would still just be an outsider to the reindeer community. Instead, he winds up the hero.

Being a fearless fish out of water means believing that you are not just taking up space but that your contributions are valuable. Cultivating this kind of confidence from deep inside of you will spur you forward more than anything else in life. So don’t apologize for who you are and what makes you different. Be bold, be creative, and put yourself out there. People who are different are often the ones who can make the biggest difference.

Of course, “be yourself” hardly seems like the kind of cutting-edge advice to build a life-changing New Year’s Resolution around. After all, everyone’s mother has said it a hundred times. But if you’re honest, you’ll admit that those two tiny words are tough to put into action. And that’s precisely why they’re so powerful.

So many people are terrified to be themselves. So when you decide to cut that inner rebel loose, well, people notice. They pay attention. And if you’ve always been the “hide your light under a bushel” type, attracting attention may be the best thing that ever happened to you. Be who you are, and just like our favorite holiday hero, you will be happy too. And that’s the only ending to your story that matters.

How to Make yourself Recession-proof

I spoke to a friend the other day who said she was worried about her job security.  Her company’s performance over the last twelve months had not been too good and now, with the economic downturn, she was worried that there might be lay-offs.

What can you do in times like these if you have similar fears?

Well, there are some things that are within your control, and others that you may just have to manage.

Let’s start with those that you can control.

Firstly and most importantly, you need to maintain your own high level of motivation to your work.  Any drop off will be noticed.  And sometimes, this drop off can happen subconsciously as you think about the “What ifs?” rather than the current projects you are working on.  People who are not performing at their best, are the most likely to be released.

Secondly, look for opportunities where you can help your organisation grow its business and reduce costs.  For example, if you work in production, then it may be useful to get together with a colleague in marketing to see how you can help them better present your product.  Now, you might say, “Well, this happens already”.  Experience shows that often there is a gap in communication between functions on some of the often overlooked, but really important issues such as the nature of repeated customer complaints, customer enquiries on product usage, feedback from suppliers and so on.

Think of it this way.  What’s the one thing that you have always said (to yourself or close colleagues), “If only THEY would … , we could be so much more productive and successful.”  Now’s the time to take the bit between your teeth and do something about that “If only …”

There are other ways that anyone within the business can help with promotion.  For example, some years ago I was driving home from work and heard the radio advertising a “midnight to dawn replay and celebration of a classic rock album all of next week”.  It just so happened that our latest TV add used one of the tracks from this album as its theme music.  Next morning I went straight to the Marketing Director who immediately got onto the radio station and signed up to sponsor the program.  It’s tempting to say “Yes, but who listens midnight to dawn?  How would sponsoring this segment help?”  True.  But, the ads for the program were repeated at least 4 times an hour throughout the day – great use of the advertising dollar – our company was mentioned four times an hour for very little outlay.  What’s more, the link established in the listener’s mind between our advert’s theme song and our product, was something money just could not buy!

Thirdly, there may be opportunities at work to take on extra projects, volunteer for international assignments, explore job-sharing or flexible working ideas with colleagues, and even the possibility of a sabbatical.  There’s also the option of reduced working hours – if a number of employees were to agree to this, then it just may make the difference between no job and a lesser paid job.

Once you’ve explored all the possibilities that will:

a)     keep you highly motivated and performing at your best, and

b)     help the organisation grow its business and/or reduce costs,

it’s time to look at things you need to do for yourself in the case that you may be laid off.

What are you an expert in?  Each of us has developed a certain level of expertise in a particular technical or professional area.  Now’s the time to explore and promote your expertise to its fullest.

1.  Join your profession’s on-line community.

There are numerous websites and blogs on any topic you care to name.  Now’s the time to contribute to these sites.  Add comments to their latest postings.  And if you are good at writing, submit articles.  At the very least, make sure you sign-off all comments with something like “Bob Selden, author of What To Do When You Become The Boss, contact me via whenyoubecometheboss.com for additional advice”

2.  Start your own website.

Get yourself a personal website, or if you like to write, a blog.  Better still get a website that includes a blog (I have three).  For a very small investment you can have a very professional image on the web.

3.  Post your profile on the web.

If you don’t want to go to those lengths, at the very least you must have a presence on the web.  You can do this through one of the many social networking sites.  I recommend Linkedin, which is far more business oriented than some of the others.  Make sure you set it up professionally and take full advantage of all of the options (most of which are free), such as career history, education, professional endorsements from colleagues, customers, bosses and so on.  Have a look at mine on Linkedin.

4.  Update your CV.

Make sure it’s exciting and lists “outputs” and “endorsements” rather than a boring list of roles and experience.  You may even consider producing a short DVD of your professional career – how about posting this on your new website?

5.  Contact your network.

Put your name out there with your colleagues and friends.  Ask for the names of recruiters and head-hunters they know of (many of whom use Linkedin to find applicants).  Draw up a list of recruiters and send your CV (and DVD if you have made one) off with a personal note addressed to the contact and where possible, say who has referred you.  Make sure you include a link to your website or Linkedin profile

6.  Get yourself endorsed.

If you’ve not already done so, start gathering endorsements and recommendations from former bosses, colleagues, customers, suppliers, professional network colleagues and so on.  Include these in your CV and online profile (you can see some on my Linkedin page for an example)

And have I taken my own advice?  You bet.  See the investment I have made in my brand new website at nationallearning.com.au
