“Destroy Everything You Touch” is a single from the electropop band Ladytron. It is the second single from their third album, Witching Hour. It reached a position of #42 on the UK Singles Chart, the highest position a Ladytron single has reached to date. The song was written by Daniel Hunt. It was rereleased in the UK on October 22, 2007.

Hot Chip aren’t known for destroying what they touch. Quite the contrary, in fact– it’s not like we’ve had a lot of complaints about their recent remixes for Kraftwerk, !!!, the Aliens, Free Blood or (especially!) Matthew Dear. Hot Chip’s remix for Liverpool outfit Ladytron’s “Destroy Everything You Touch”, from a forthcoming UK single, gives the song some exotic color without taking its eyes off of the dancefloor. The original, pulled from excellent album The Witching Hour to become Pitchfork’s #28 single of 2005, was shivery, gale-force synthpop.
Hot Chip’s version starts like the calm after the winter storm, with Helen Marnie’s vocals reduced to a whisper over Japanese-sounding instrumentation and a distant 4×4 stomp. Predictably enough, Hot Chip can’t keep quiet for long, bringing on muscular bass, buzzing alien synths, and additional percussion. Aroyo’s voice beats down sadsack keyboard melodies, and the Hot Chippers pipe out some “ohh” backing vocals because that’s what they’re there for. Not destruction so much as remodeling.
“Destroy Everything You Touch” is featured on the video game 2006 FIFA World Cup. It’s one of the many EA Trax that appear in the game. The song also appears in the 2007 movie Smiley Face, and in the movie one missed call.
Ladytron is an electronic pop band originally based in Liverpool, England, although members originate from Sofia and Glasgow as well as Liverpool itself. The band has been active since 1999, releasing three full-length albums, with a fourth album due in June 2008 through the Nettwerk label. Ladytron tours extensively around the world, both with live shows and DJ sets.
Ladytron has a cult audience worldwide and toured extensively in support of Witching Hour from mid-2005 to mid-2007. Across Europe, they opened for Nine Inch Nails in early 2007 at the invitation of Trent Reznor.
Ladytron makes electronic pop music, using an array of vintage analogue equipment to achieve its distinct sound. Albums so far have focused on a balance between pop structures and analogue electronic sound, along with some more experimental leanings. All four members write songs differently, which adds to the eclectic nature of their albums. Their third album, Witching Hour, saw an augmentation of their sound, leading the album to be described by Pitchfork as a “quantum leap record”.

I agreed with your comment exactly . . . for about the first two minutes of the track. There was something about her cadence that just didn’t mesh with the instrumental, but then the song really picks up, and everything smooths together brilliantly. I think if the opening were the melodic lyrics, and not just the whispered lyrics, the clash wouldn’t be there. All in all, it’s a fantastic mix, as always, I love both Hot Chip and Ladytron. I’m going to try to let the opening grow on me.
